Classical Music with pianist Ian Scarfe and violinist Edwin Huizinga

  • The Sound Room 3022 Broadway Oakland, CA, 94611 United States (map)

Ian and Edwin present a program that showcases legendary "Classical" composers taking inspiration from the popular and folk music around them. This guided tour, with these two charismatic and virtuoso guides, will take us from the Eastern European peasant music of Béla Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances, to the swaggering sounds of nuevo-tango with Astor Piazzolla's Libertango. The duo will perform American music of George Gershwin, one of the most famous composers to blend popular and concert music, as well as a tune by East-Bay jazz composer and violinist Mads Tolling.

The centerpiece of the concert, the entrée of the menu, the highlight of the evening will be the symphonic and cinematic Violin Sonata No. 3 by Edvard Grieg. A Norwegian composer, Grieg fills this high-energy piece with Scandinavian folk songs, feverish dance rhythms, and dazzling virtuosity.

Ian Scarfe is a concert pianist who tours the U.S. and Europe regularly, equally comfortable as a soloist or a collaborator. He is the director of the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, and a sought-after speaker and educator on music.

Edwin Huizinga is a multi-genre violinist, composer, conductor, and musical entrepreneur. With his initial training in classical and baroque violin, he has toured the world and performed with some of the top artists, including Yo Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, and Stevie Wonder. He performs worldwide with his folk-crossover duo Fire & Grace, and is a local favorite as a longtime mainstay of the Carmel Bach Festival.
