StorySlam Oakland is a night of 5-minute true stories on a theme. It’s the season of summer blockbusters so this month’s theme is: Mission Impossible.
For a chance to tell your true story about your impossible mission, put your name in the hat. Missions can range from the grand, graduate-school variety to the mundane, catching a bird in the house genre. Re-imagine your most difficult period as a mission impossible story. Or take an ordinary adventure you had and tell it with suspense and passion. As long as it’s true, about you, and reflects on the theme in some way, we want to hear your story.
How it works: The hosts choose most of the storytellers at random from the names in the hat, although we may have one or two special guests. Then at the end there may be a Featured Storyteller with a slightly longer story. We usually have time for 8 to 10 storytellers.
StorySlam Official Rules:
Stories must be TRUE, about YOU, and 5 minutes or less. We will have a timer to help keep you on track. A bell will sound when it’s time to wrap up.
No reading or notes allowed. You'll tell it like you're telling friends around a dinner table.
Or just listen and laugh!
StorySlam Oakland has become a community of people who enjoy making Oakland a little warmer and friendlier by sharing their true experiences in a casual setting.
MORE DETAILS:
The Sound Room is great for date night. The roomy interior space has uncrowded tables and chairs for dining and watching, great lighting, and a friendly low stage. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
There is a short menu of snacks, desserts, share plates, good wines and craft beers, and great non-alcoholic drinks, too. Suggested minimum is $10 per person to support the Sound Room.
Doors open early, at 6:30 so you can pick your seats and order some food and drink. There will be one intermission.
StorySlam is suitable for adults and older teens, and as we can't control the content of the stories, is not recommended for young children.
StorySlam Oakland is Oakland’s longest-running independent true storytelling show, started in 2013. To receive monthly updates about new show dates and upcoming themes, subscribe to the email list at StorySlam Oakland.com.
