Michael Ragonese, a pianist from Los Angeles who's been playing for over 25 years, is appreciated for his versatile skill set that covers various music genres. His classical piano roots transitioned into jazz during his high school years, ultimately leading him to obtain a degree in jazz piano from California State University Northridge. During his time at CSUN he won first place in the Reno and Monterey Jazz Festivals, earning him a reputation as a remarkable soloist. In the years following, Ragonese has emerged as a sought-after musician, performing and recording with Barbra Streisand, Charnett Moffett, Bennie Maupin, Mark Turner, Walter Smith III, Dave Koz, Norman Brown, Rick Braun, Alphonso Johnson, John Daversa, Tierney Sutton, Stanley Jordan, Engelbert Humperdinck, Tom Jones, Shoshana Bean, Sue Raney, Dave Binney, Bob Sheppard and more. In 2019, he debuted as a leader with his album, "Day to Day,” which featured Walter Smith III and since then has taken his trio on tour across prominent US jazz clubs. His upcoming album, "Stracci," is a tribute to his Italian heritage and reflects his classical music background. Alongside his performance career, Ragonese significantly contributes to the LA jazz community as an educator and a session leader. His Rags School of Music, established in 2021, focuses on the instruction of jazz and classical music geared towards students interested in pursuing a career in music. In addition to his school, Ragonese launched his very first jazz summer intensive in July 2023 in which he worked intensively with 2 combos prepping them for their careers in music. He also hosts the Rags Session, a weekly jazz jam at The Rhythm in Downtown Los Angeles, featuring renowned artists such as Luca Alemanno and Mark Ferber.These sessions offer a great opportunity for jazz fans and musicians of all levels to come together, learn, and play, helping to affirm Ragonese's role within the LA jazz scene.
