Europe has many pianists who were classical players before they were jazz musicians. In their music, two sensibilities often coexist. One serves received ideas. One serves ideas as they become possible. One requires discipline. One requires faith in the moment. There are fewer such pianists in the United States. One is Dahveed Behroozi. Behroozi says his pieces come “out of … improvising at home.” He brings only sketches and sees where the music evolves.
He is a pianist whose firm spontaneous forms win your trust. You sit back and follow him as he explores the keyboard and comes upon small constellations of notes, sometimes as few as one, that render his thoughts and emotions. He makes bare dark melodies.
Ursula Oppens, a renowned virtuoso of contemporary classical music, has praised Behroozi’s “creativity, curiosity and integrity,” adding that “his performances are stunning, his interpretations astonishing.” Likewise, jazz piano star Fred Hersch has described Behroozi’s music-making as “intense and immersive,” with the pianist’s evolution as an improviser revealing “deep musical knowledge and devotion.”
Behroozi’s expansive musical palette comes from a wide array of places that almost seem endless. His main focus in music is improvisation. He’s constantly striving to find new sounds and feelings in his work, and hopefully take the listener on a multi-sensory landscape, rather than just a sonic one.
