Kenny Washington with Mads Tolling

  • The Sound Room 3022 Broadway Oakland, CA, 94611 United States (map)

Called “one of the most important male vocalists in the world” by frequent collaborator and leader, Joe Locke, in JazzTimes, Kenny is a masterful vocalist and “the superman of the Bay Area jazz scene” (SF Chronicle). He is easily among the most beloved jazz singers working today.and has thrilled audiences across the globe with his soulful interpretations, seemingly limitless range, and inventive scatting. A New Orleans native, Washington grew up with the gospel music he heard in church, singing and performing from an early age. Following studies at Louisiana’s Xavier University, Washington toured internationally for nearly a decade as part of the U.S. Navy Band, eventually settling in Bay Area after completing his service.

He appeared alongside Elvis Costello and Deborah Harry in Jazz Passengers founder Roy Nathanson’s production Fire at Keaton’s Bar & Grill in London and New York, and has performed in clubs throughout the Bay Area and around the world, regularly collaborating with bandleader and composer Marcus Shelby, saxophonist Michael O’Neill, vibraphonist Joe Locke, and body percussionist Keith Terry.

Kenny will be performing with a wonderful quintet composed of bassist Gary Brown, pianist Adam Shulman, drummer Jason Lewis , and a very special guest, violin Mads Tolling
