StorySlam Oakland

  • The Sound Room 3022 Broadway Oakland, CA, 94611 United States (map)

StorySlam Oakland is Oakland's longest-running true storytelling show, where people tell short and true stories from their lives. Or just listen and laugh.

February's theme is "Advice." What have you been telling people? What have they been telling you? Come tell us a 5-minute true story about some memorable advice you received (or gave) and what happened. Life lessons, relationships, marriage and parenting, work or retirement, anything goes as long as you tell us the story behind it and what happened. (But please, save your medical stories for another audience.) Unasked for advice, a suggestion you were compelled to make, an online review that swayed you. We could all use some funny advice stories! Note: not all stories may be funny. Sometimes advice turns out to be tragic.

Featured Storyteller:Eva Schlesinger is a well-known Bay Area storyteller who you may have seen onstage at The Moth or other StorySlam Oakland shows. But we're giving her a long rein to tell us a more elaborate story as our Feature. Eva is a writer and humorist, who is beloved for her memorable style. If life is an ever-changing river, Eva has the rare ability to take its pebbles and sand and create story gold.

HOW THE SHOW WORKS:

Anybody can put their name in the hat for a chance to tell their true, personal story on the theme.

Storytellers will be mostly picked at random from the names in the hat. We usually have time for 8 to 10 open-mic storytellers. We also present one or two Featured Storytellers from our wonderful storytelling community. These are people who have won awards at various shows, or just are known to us for their great storytelling style and charisma. The Featured Storytellers tell true, personal stories, but a little longer than the open-mic'ers.
