Classical Sound Room

  • The Sound Room 3022 Broadway Oakland, CA, 94611 United States (map)

The Sound Room presents another great evening of classical music. This concert will feature pianist Ian Scarfe and violinist Melanie Clapies, two local stars of the classical music scene.

The duo will perform a variety of works showcasing the various styles of the past three centuries of music. The concert will feature romantic classics by Tchaikovsky and Fritz Kreisler, Scandinavian dances by Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius, and popular salon-style music from the early 20th Century, including Jacob Gade's "Tango Jalousie".

The concert will also give a nod to several extraordinary female composers whose music has often been overlooked. American pianist and composer Amy Beach wrote her "Romance for Violin and Piano" for the 1893 Women's Musical Congress. French composers Cecile Chaminade and Lili Boulanger demonstrate the various popular styles in Paris of the early 1900s - with Chaminade's neo-classical "Rondeau" and Boulanger's lush, impressionistic "Nocturne".

Ian Scarfe enjoys a wide ranging career as an advocate for music. Initially following directions to become a piano soloist, he quickly discovered the joys of diversifying his work. As a performer he is equally comfortable as a soloist, accompanying recital partners, or in the mix of a small or large ensemble. As a speaker, he is a frequent lecturer during formal concerts, a host and emcee during casual musical events, and also a narrator to children's programs. As a musical entrepreneur, he keeps a busy travel schedule across the United States and Europe organizing concerts, tours, and festivals.

Ian will be joined by Melanie Clapies. Born in Paris, Mélanie Clapiès is a violinist who cultivates a unique solo and chamber music career worldwide. A versatile and fluid artist, her collaborators have included musicians such as Anthony Marwood, Roger Tapping, and John Myerscough, Pavel Vernikov, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Victor Julien-Laferrière, Adam Laloum, Guillaume Vincent, and conductors Carolyn Kuan and Louis Lohraseb. She performs regularly in venues such as Le Poisson Rouge, Carnegie Hall, and National Sawdust and has participated in festivals in the United States including Yellow Barn, in France at Colmar, Musique en roue libre in Arras, the Festival de Pâques and the Août Musical in Deauville, la Roque d’Anthéron a part of the Trio Siddhartha, in Italy at the Salon Romantique of the Palazzetto Bru Zane in Venice, “Suona Francese” in Naples, Portogruaro, in Spain at the festival “Fondation Monteleon” in Leon, and in Algeria, Malta, and Russia
